Brooke (Edward W.) is born in Washington, D.C.

October 26, 1919

The son of Edward and Helen (Seldon) Brooke, Edward Brooke graduates from Howard University, serves in the U.S. Army Infantry in Italy in World War II, and comes to Boston to attend Boston University School of Law in 1945. Brook marries Remigia Ferrari-Sacco, moves to 26 Crawford Street, and opens a law office in 1951. After running unsuccessfully for office as a Democrat beginning in 1950,* he becomes a Republican, and serves as the first African-American Massachusetts Attorney General (1962-66) and first African-American in the U.S. Senate since Reconstruction (1967-1978). Brooke dies in Coral Gables, Florida, on January 3, 2015.
